Weatherproof LED Drivers

Weatherproof LED Drivers

Having a weatherproof or weather-resistant LED Driver for your application can give you confidence that your lighting installation can continue operating soundly regardless of small or large weather events.

Our range of LED drivers are certified IP Ratings from IP65 up to IP67, providing varying degrees of weather resistance to meet your LED lighting application needs.

IP Ratings? What is that?

Ingress Protection rating system, or IP Ratings, is a globally recognised rating system applied to all electrical devices to grade what level of ingress protection they provide against dust particles and moisture.

Each digit within the sequence relates to a level or grading and its effectiveness against the elements. Below we've outlined a basic understanding of our IP-rated LED Drivers.

IP65 LED Drivers

The first numerical digit 6, represents a dust-tight level of ingress protection, whilst the 5, represents a protection against water jets from a nozzle. A weatherproof LED Driver with this rating can tolerate a light spray from a garden hose or similar degree of weather, such as light rain.

IP66 LED Drivers

The first numerical digit, 6, represents a dust-tight level of ingress protection, whilst the 6, represents protection against higher-pressure water jets. A weatherproof LED Driver with this rating may tolerate spraying from a pressure hose or heavier rainfall.

IP67 LED Drivers

The first numerical digit, 6, represents a dust-tight level of ingress protection, whilst the 7, represents a protection safety measure against immersion in water up to a depth of 1 metre. A weatherproof LED driver with this rating may tolerate immersion in shallow water, such as a minor flooding event, for up to 30 minutes.

Installers should be mindful that the wire connections, mounting method, and cyclic heating and cooling of the LED drivers all contribute to protecting the internal electronics. Therefore, it is recommended that all best efforts be made to install LED drivers in dry locations to minimise exposure to moisture.

It should be known that if an LED Driver is directly exposed to weather over extended periods of time, it will be nearly impossible to keep water out of the power supply.

The reason for this is that IP ratings are provided after successful testing under certain conditions, which includes a specific timeframe. For example, as mentioned above, the IP67 rating is given to products that have been submerged for up to 30 minutes in a depth of up to 1 metre. If an IP67-rated LED Driver is exposed to conditions beyond this, a failure in operational capacity may result. If LED Drivers are not installed appropriately, related failures are often not covered under warranty.

Don’t forget to Weatherproof your Connections!

When installing a weatherproof LED Driver, all efforts may come undone if your connections are neglected from being stored also within a weatherproof environment. ADM offers many weatherproof connectors up to IP68 to ensure your wire connections remain dust and water-resistant during weather events.
