Different Dimming Types for LED Lighting
Lighting is not just about functionality, it’s a powerful way to change the atmosphere of a space and set the right mood. Dimmers work by sending a signal that controls the voltage and current going to the light, allowing you to increase or decrease the light intensity.
While dimming may seem straightforward, it involves several important factors. Different types of lights require specific dimming technologies to function properly and provide smooth, flicker-free illumination. The most common dimming types in Australia include phase dimming, 1-10V dimming, 0-10V dimming and DALI dimming.
Phase Dimming
Phase dimming, also known as AC dimming or Triac dimming, is widely used in homes and some commercial settings. There are two main types: leading edge and trailing edge. Leading edge dimmers can dim low voltage transformers powering low voltage 12V lamps and constant current dimmable LED drivers. However, they have a maximum wattage limit and overloading them can cause damage. Trailing edge dimmers are more complex and expensive, but they offer advanced technology and better control such as multi-way dimming.
1-10V Dimming
1-10V dimming is a popular choice for LED lights, particularly in commercial settings. This method allows for smooth and consistent dimming without maximum load restrictions, making it versatile for multiple fixtures. However, it requires a separate control cable for each driver, which is best installed during construction.
0-10V Dimming
0-10V dimming is another method that can control the brightness of LED lights all the way to off at zero volts. While 1-10V dimming can only dim down to about 10% brightness (1 volt), it can't completely turn off the lights without an extra switch. Both methods are easy to use and work well with LED lights, but they need to be matched correctly with the right dimmers and drivers for the best results.
DALI Dimming
Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) is a computer-controlled system that allows for independent control of each light fixture. This is especially useful in larger commercial installations, where you can manage each light separately rather than dimming all lights on the same circuit together. The newer version, DALI-2 expands on this functionality, working with input devices such as motion sensors and light sensors.
Control Freak Lighting Control
For specialised dimming needs, Control Freak offers innovative solutions. SLAMMO V5 PCBA LED dimmer supports various protocols, including DMX and DALI, and provides smooth transitions for multi-channel LED dimming. The IP67 LED dimmer is designed for outdoor use and integrates easily with smart home systems, allowing for precise control over brightness and colour temperature.
